  • Naukri leads the online job search domain.

The recent JuxtConsult study on preferred websites of netizens reveals that leading portals dominate the Indian online space for the most popular web based activities. Yahoo, Indiatimes, Rediff, MSN and Sify are the established generic portals while Google, Naukri and Shaadi among others have earned good niche audiences.

The research also finds that most popular net activities are social and professional interaction, keeping track of news and events, check for sports and cinema content, information search and employment.

These and other key insights have emerged out of one of the largest online surveys conducted by JuxtConsult in April 2005 among the Internet users in India. The survey sampled more than 30,000 users with the aim to unravel the identity of the net user along with his lifestyle choices.

What are Indians doing most on the net?

For interacting on the net, say Yahoo!
Yahoo is the most preferred channel for communication- both for email and instant messaging. Among email providers, Yahoo has 38% user share. Rediff and Hotmail follow with 21% and 18% user base. Gmail, a relatively new player, is estimated to have 5% user base and looks set to firmly establish itself as an email service provider. Yahoo is also the most popular medium for instant messaging and commands 74% share. Hotmail's messenger is a distant second with 15% users utilizing it for instant communication.

Enlightenment served best at Google
An indomitable 75% of the Indian net population searches for information on Google. Googling for answers has caught on as one of the most visible trends within the net savvy community today. Yahoo provides answers to 6% of users while 3% users get informed through Rediff.

A match made in heaven: also known as Shaadi
12% of all net users look for life partners online. Of these 31% head to Shaadi.com. People Interactive (I) Pvt Ltd owns Shaadi along with Fropper, which also figures in the list of top ten matchmaking sites. Bharatmatrimony.com garners 16% of votes from users who search for their significant others on the web. 16% share also goes to Indiatimes dating service and Timesmatri.com, which are differently oriented, but are both associated with the Times Group. Yahoo and Rediff are marginally popular in the online matchmaking arena as well with their Yahoo Personals and Rediff Matchmaker services.

Indiatimes is top online news source
Indiatimes enjoys the position of the most preferred news source on the web. Be it general, sport or event related news, it is the top player in this category with 30% user share. Indiatimes' popularity can be also attributed to its close association with Times of India, one of the largest dailies in the country. The only news channel to feature in the top five is NDTV, the web edition of which is the second largest news source while Rediff occupies third position as an online news provider. The web avatar of ESPN STAR is also a favoured destination for sports related news and is ranked fourth*.

*ESPN's fourth rank can be attributed to the India-Pakistan cricket series, which was on a little before the survey was conducted.

Users pick ebay as website of choice for shopping
An overwhelming 44% of users prefer to shop online at ebay.in, formerly known as Baazee. 22% of users pick Rediff as their choice of online shopping channel. 17% users like to shop online at Indiatimes. Books and CD's are biggest online buys. Along with these, Household and electronic appliances along with clothes/accessories are other popular goods bought on the web.

From wired to hired: Naukri shows the way
Naukri.com is the biggest recruitment portal on the web. 46% netizens prefer Naukri.com, which offers a host of employment related services. Second ranked is Monster.com with 20% users picking it as their preferred job site and Jobsahead.com holds the third rank. However, owing to Monster's recent acquisition of Jobsahead, the e-recruitment category may witness renewed competition.
